The Instructors...

Phil Foster M, ED.
Education Director
Theory and Field Skills Instructor

Phil FosterSooke Adventure Tourism School has been a part of my life since 2002. Before that I helped develop the adventure tourism program in BC and taught it at Camosun College. I also helped develop the Guardian Training Program for First Nations and Parks Canada through Malaspina University College. These programs helped generate the program at Sooke Adventure Tourism School today!

In my previous life I enjoyed working in Europe and Canada in a variety of positions such as Director of Outdoor Adventure Centres, teaching at Universities as well as running adventure tourism businesses and consulting.

The experience’s that have enabled me to create the program at Sooke Adventure Tourism School range from instructing skiing, sailing, kayaking, scuba diving and mountaineering, to training mountain and sea rescue groups. My consulting work has taken me to such amazing places as the Outer Hebrides in Scotland, the Mediterranean and the Dolomites in Italy. In between times I gained a Masters Degree in Education, had books published on Adventure Tourism, Sailing and Water Safety, and I was consultant for a number of Canadian Red Cross publications.

In the wonderful summertime here in BC I maintain my love for the outdoors by teaching Sailboat Cruising, Kayak Guiding and leading Adventure Groups.

My involvement in the Tourism Industry continues today as a member of the Provincial Adventure Tourism Articulation Committee, as a Speaker and Presenter at Conferences, Seminars and Workshops, and as an Instructor Trainer. I am presently a Consultant in the Adventure Tourism industry, an Evaluator for National Standards in the Hospitality industry, and I am on the Board of the International Sail and Power Association.

I really enjoy working in this industry because we have so much fun, and the people I get to work with are always interesting and exciting.

Between the great people and the amazing environments in which we get to play, there isn’t a better way to spend my life and get paid for it!

What can I say… I love what I do!
